Northern Lights to be Visible in Indiana This Weekend

Best Viewing Conditions in Rural Areas

NOAA Advises Avoiding City Lights

Residents of Indiana may have a chance to witness the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, this weekend. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a severe solar storm is expected to supercharge the lights, making them visible in a wider area than usual. However, the best viewing conditions will be in rural areas away from city lights.

The Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts a severe G4 Geomagnetic Storm for Friday, August 19th. This storm is likely to create intense auroras that may be visible as far south as Indiana.

NOAA advises those hoping to see the northern lights to head to a location with dark skies and low light pollution. This may involve driving to a rural area or finding a secluded spot away from bright lights. It is also important to be patient, as the lights can sometimes take hours to appear.

The northern lights are a natural light display that occurs when charged particles from the sun interact with the Earth's magnetic field. The colors of the lights depend on the type of gas molecules that the particles collide with.
