Powerful Quake Hits Arequipa Coast, Five Injured

Lima, Peru (AP) - A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck near the coast of southern Peru early Friday, triggering a tsunami warning that was later canceled. Authorities reported at least five injuries from the quake.

The earthquake hit at 4:18 a.m. local time, about 90 kilometers (56 miles) southwest of the city of Arequipa at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Peruvian Navy initially issued a tsunami warning for the coast of Arequipa, but it was later canceled.

The quake caused damage to buildings in Arequipa and surrounding areas, including cracked walls and broken windows. The five injured individuals were treated for minor injuries.

Authorities in Peru are urging residents in affected areas to be cautious and follow safety guidelines.
